My experience was consistently empowering. I was part of the decision-making process at every step of the way. My care team was exactly that—a team of caring people—and I made lifelong friends with patients and employees. My naturopathic provider and my dietitian helped me manage and prevent side effects, taught me how to shop for and cook healthier foods, and recommended supplements to take during and after treatment to help my recovery. My husband and I were still newlyweds, filled with plans for our long life together.

While October 13 is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, we want to make sure to recognize, acknowledge, and honor these very special members of our Breastcancer. We've asked some members to share their stories of living with metastatic disease to offer support and encouragement to others facing this diagnosis. I was barely starting my new job in administration at a new charter school, only 3 years in, and I got slammed with this diagnosis. It had to be done for the best outcome. To me, having stage IV cancer, 'the horse was already out of the barn.
It was October of , at the age of 37, that I found a lump in my breast. I have two small boys. I was happy, relatively healthy and loved being at home with my kids. I was prepared for a rough year that would include a double mastectomy, chemo and radiation but then, I felt sure, I would beat it.
When we hear that breast cancer has spread, it usually comes as a great shock. As you face this difficult time, we want you to know that there are women living full and meaningful lives despite having metastatic breast cancer.
